It’s time for our weekly look around the baseball landscape with the Hoos and the rest of the ACC.

As usual, we’ll take a look at how UVA stacks up in the latest baseball polls. We’ll review the results from the past weekend of action in the ACC. And we’ll check out my latest ACC power rankings.

Because the midweek schedules vary between Tuesday and Wednesday for teams, the power rankings will be based on play through the prior weekend.

Hoos In The Polls

UVA lost two of three to Florida State in Tallahassee. Did the Hoos fall out of the polls completely?

Poll Current Rank Previous Rank
Baseball America 21 8
College Baseball Nation 19 15
Collegiate Baseball Not Ranked 25
D1 Baseball Not Ranked 16
NCBWA 25 17
Perfect Game 24 15
USA Today Coaches Not Ranked 18

UVA needs to win their series this weekend if they want to remain in the polls.

ACC Standings

Now that we’ve got two weeks of conference play in the books for most teams, it’s time to start including the standings. For reference, the top 12 teams in the conference make the ACC Tournament. That will leave two teams on the outside looking in.

ACC Weekend Scoreboard

Conference results continue to be interesting. And Boston College had an epic comeback to pull out an unexpected win.

Boston College (2-1): BC’s series at Wake Forest was canceled due to COVID issues within the Wake’s program. BC put together a last minute series at Auburn for the weekend and proceeded to take two of three. Sunday’s game three was capped by an epic 8 run, 2 out rally in the top of the 9th to force extra winnings where BC won in 10.

Clemson (1-2): After playing out of conference against South Carolina in Week 1 of the ACC season, Clemson opened their conference season by hosting Notre Dame. The Irish came to Clemson and won on Saturday and Sunday to take the series.

Duke (2-1): Duke hosted Pitt and won the Friday and Saturday games for their first ACC series win on the season. Duke nearly got the sweep but lost on Sunday by a run.

Florida State (2-1): Unfortunately for UVA, FSU took two of three from the Hoos. Florida State had their opportunities on Sunday to complete the sweep, but some late game heroics from UVA’s defense and closer Stephen Schoch denied the Seminoles a sweep.

Georgia Tech (2-1): After dropping the series opener, the Yellow Jackets won out on the weekend to top ACC preseason favorite Louisville. Georgia Tech continues to look really good on the young season.

Louisville (1-2): The Cards couldn’t take advantage of a strong Friday win in Atlanta. Louisville gave up 32 runs on Saturday and Sunday to fall 2 to 1 in the series to Georgia Tech.

Miami (2-1): Miami bounced back from their home series loss in ACC Week 1 at home to Virginia Tech by going on the road and taking two of three from NC State. Miami won on Saturday and Sunday by identical 6 to 4 scores.

NC State (1-2): The Wolfpack continue to struggle in conference play. Things looked good on Friday as their offense put up 11 runs against the Hurricanes.

North Carolina (1-2): UNC’s quest to own the Commonwealth this season was not successful as they dropped the series to the surprising Hokies in Blacksburg. The Tar Heels battled to a 9 to 6 win on Sunday to avoid a VT sweep.

Notre Dame (2-1): The Irish continued the trend of ACC upstarts beating more established programs as they took two of three at Clemson to move to 2-0 in ACC series on the season.

Pitt (1-2): The Panthers were unable to bottle the magic they found in their opening week sweep of FSU. They were nearly swept themselves at Duke instead.

Virginia (1-2): Another disappointing road outcome for the Hoos as UVA is still trying to solve ACC pitching. On the positive side, UVA’s pitching appears as advertised and they’ve been on the road the first two weekends of conference play.

Virginia Tech (2-1): The Hokies continue to their run of good play to start the season. A near sweep of the Tarheels has the Hokies playing with a ton of confidence.

Wake Forest (N/A): Internal COVID issues at Wake Forest led to the canceling of their home series against Boston College.
