Under Coach O’Connor, the UVA baseball program has a reputation for being a family affair. And that’s the case here as Aidan is the younger brother of current Hoo Kyle Teel.

Originally a member of the 2023 baseball class, Teel surprised the college baseball world when he signed with the Hoos on National Signing Day on November 10, 2021 as a member of the 2022 baseball class. Teel’s signing and tweet above was the first indication that he had reclassed and would be a member of the UVA baseball team for the 2023 season.

Teel went in depth with the Jersey Baseball Show after signing day explaining the reason and mechanics behind his decision to join the Hoos a season earlier than anticipated.

In his original 2023 class, Teel was ranked 120th overall and the top player in New Jersey. After his reclass into 2022, Perfect Game now ranks Teel 298th overall and 11th in the New Jersey rankings.

Scouting Teel

Teel has the ability to be a two-way player at the ACC level.

Prep Baseball Report’s Shooter Hunt saw Teel pitch in April 2021. He noted that Teel had a compact arm action with a three-quarter arm slot. In the game that Hunt witnessed, Teel struck out 7 while walking 3 and giving up 1 hit across 5 innings of work. Hunt charted Teel’s fastball at 88 to 90 MPH. Teel’s slider had a late biting action while sitting 79 to 81 MPH.

Writing for Prospects Live in December 2021, Brian Recca scouted several 2022 MLB draft possibilities from the Tri-State area of New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. Aidan Teel was one of the players profiled.

Recca notes during October’s 2021 World Wood Bat Association (WWBA) event, Teel had increased his fastball velocity to 93 MPH. Recca called Teel a raw pitcher with a quick and loose arm in a compact motion. Teel, per Recca, also showcases an improving slider with tight spin.

From the plate, it’s not difficult to see pieces of Kyle in Aidan’s swing. Recca, at the aforementioned WWBA event, noted the similarities when he said that Aidan “has an undersized but strong and athletic build that is similar to his brother’s”. A 2019 scouting report from Prep Baseball Report indicated that Teel has aggressive hands and hips with an uphill finish. They also mention that the ball jumps off of his bat.

2023 Contributions

It’s clear that Teel is thought of primarily as a pitching prospect. Researching him, it was difficult to find many notes about Aidan from the plate (see going back to 2019 for a scouting note above).

However, if Teel is to contribute to the 2023 Hoos, it may have to be in the field (he can play both the infield and outfield) or with his bat. With the copious amount of innings up for grabs on the 2023 roster that may seem counterintuitive.

But there are reports that Teel suffered an injury while pitching during the 2022 high school season. It’s not mentioned in the linked article but it’s believed that the injury did require surgery of some sort. As a result, you have to wonder if he’ll be able to pitch this season. The upcoming fall baseball scrimmages and Orange & Blue World Series may help sort that out one way or the other.

In any event, Teel does appear to be participating in workouts with the team as he was recently pictured in workout gear at a UVA soccer match with Jake Gelof, Kyle Teel, and JMU transfer Travis Reifsnider.
