“That streak is over.”

And with that simple yet powerful sentence, an emotional Virginia coach Bronco Mendenhall — hugging heroic quarterback Bryce Perkins — told the sideline reporter with words, but more importantly, tone of voice, what he thought of Virginia Tech’s now-dead 15-game winning streak against UVa as Wahoo faithful rushed the field in glee following the Cavaliers’ 39-30, come-from-behind-three-times win on Black Friday.

Perkins was magnificent, recording 475 total yards, the receivers made big plays, the offense woke up late — Robert Anae even started calling some good plays — Brian Delaney boomed a 48-yard go-ahead field goal (redeeming his earlier missed extra point), and the defense put the nail in the Hokies’ coffin with a strip sack by Mandy Alonso. Fittingly, program stalwart Eli Hanback — who’s never missed a game in four years — landed on the ball in the end zone, putting the emphatic stamp on the streak-killing W.

More to come from the Hoos Place gang as we break down the win and celebrate the Coastal championship. For now, though, enjoy being Commonwealth of Virginia champs!
